Coyote study (includes Metro Atlanta)

Dr. Chris Mowry is an ecologist at Berry College who, among other things, studies the expansion of coyote range in the US.

His Coyote Research page has links to some of his work as well as a lecture titled "Coexisting with Coyotes."

Additionally, Dr. Mowry is collaborating with Zoo Atlanta and the Fernbank Science Center to track coyote sightings in Metro Atlanta. If you would like to help him collect data, you may use this survey to  report your sighting.

Coyote Alert: more sightings near Medlock Park

This was posted on Facebook tonight [around 8pm-ish]
In the last couple of months, there have been many sightings all over the neighborhood. We've had reports of coyotes near Medlock Park, on Gaylemont, and in the Medlock Elementary school property but also on Woodridge and Desmond.

As you will read in just about any article about coyotes, they are clever and adaptable. Other critters in the wild kingdom look up to them as models of range expansion. Our neighborhood, graced as it is with pockets of woods, creeks, and ample food supply, are simply too attractive.

City of Decatur has created a page with links on coping with urban coyotes, see  http://www.decaturga.com/index.aspx?page=569. Please review this information to ensure you and your pets remain safe.

p.s.
Admittedly far cuter and less threatening than coyotes, San Joaquin foxes are another example of wild canids who thrive in close proximity to humans.

Recent Coyote Sightings

Saturday, 12/3/2011, ~8 a.m.: Single large coyote seen walking down the street, 800th block of Gaylemont Circle

Monday, 12/12/11, 7:35am: "I live on Alberson Court and this morning at 7:35am I saw two large coyotes in the yard across the street. One appeared to have a squirrel in his mouth. The other was trotting along beside. I watched as they crossed three yards on Alberson Ct. and then crossed Woodridge Rd. and then seemed to disappear into a driveway/backyard on Woodridge."

Coyote sighting @ Gaylemont

A neighbor reports
I was walking along Gaylemont Circle around 6:25am and saw two coyotes standing under the streetlamp. Seems to me one was darker and the other one lighter in color. They were facing my way and not moving when I noticed them. I slowed down and stomped my feet loudly and they turned into the small trail on the side of the school and disappeared into the woods.
Another reminder to all to keep small pets safely indoors. See this AJC article for more information on urban coyotes.
