Free pet adoptions in September!

High Intake Levels Prompts Fee-Waived Promotion at DeKalb County Animal Services, Fulton County Animal Services and LifeLine Animal Project
ATLANTA, GA -- (August 31, 2015)   LifeLine Animal project invites you to celebrate fall and save lives through their “Fall in Love” promotion.  Due to the high number of animals coming into DeKalb County Animal Services (DCAS) and Fulton County Animal Services (FCAS), throughout September all dogs, puppies, cats and kittens may be adopted for FREE!

In August, DCAS took in over 756 animals and FCAS took in over 660 animals.  FCAS Director Lara Hudson is optimistic that the “Fall in Love” promotion will result in many homeless pets finding their forever homes.  “With 30 plus animals entering the shelter daily, we urgently need public support to help us save lives, and we're hopeful that the public will step up and adopt from us” says Lara.

LifeLine Animal Project CEO Rebecca Guinn says that offering fee-waived adoptions is a great way to increase adoption rates.  “Free adoptions tend to create a buzz of excitement and bring more people into shelters,” she says.  “According to numerous studies, fee-waived promotions increase adoptions without compromising the quality of care that the animals receive.”
All September, adopters will receive a dog or cat that has been spayed or neutered, has had all vaccines and is microchipped – a $250 value – for FREE!  Adoption counselors will be on hand at both shelters to ensure the animals are being placed in good homes.

To view animals available for adoption, or for the shelter’s address and phone number, please go to FCAS or DCAS or visit us online www.fultonanimalservices.com/adoptable-animals or  www.dekalbanimalservices.com/adopt-a-pet.

Adopt a dog or cat this Memorial weekend

Our local shelters need your help...

FULTON COUNTY and  DEKALB COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES are SLASHING ADOPTION FEES to relieve overcrowding

ATLANTA, GA -- (May 23, 2014)  Warmer weather has brought an influx of animals to Fulton County Animal Services (FCAS) and DeKalb County Animal Services (DCAS), and the shelters are overrun with dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. To save lives and encourage adoptions, FCAS is waiving the adoption fee on all adoptable animals from Friday, May 23, to Monday, May 26!  Similarly, DCAS is offering reduced adoption fees of only $20 for dogs over six months and $10 for cats over six months until the end of May.  Adoption counselors will be on hand to ensure the animals are being placed in good homes.

According to FCAS Director Lara Hudson, her shelter is beyond its comfortable capacity. “This shelter was originally designed to house only 80 animals at a time, but can comfortably house about 250,” says Lara. “Today we are housing 350 dogs and cats, so we are asking the community to step in and save lives by adopting dogs and cats free of charge.”

DCAS Shelter Director Susan Feingold says that besides needing the public to adopt their wonderful dogs and cats, they also need help fostering underage kittens.  “We’ve had so many kittens too young to adopt come into our shelter that would do much better in foster homes,” she says.  “The public can help us by fostering kittens for a few weeks.”

Adopters at both FCAS and DCAS will receive a dog or cat that has been spayed or neutered, has had all vaccines and is microchipped – a $200 value.  To view animals available for adoption, or for the shelter’s address and phone number, please visit the shelter or visit www.fultonanimalservices.com/adopt  for FCAS or www.dekalbanimalservices.com/adopt for DCAS.

Easter lilies and cats don't mix

via wikipedia
As Easter approaches, Easter lilies are making an appearance at local stores. If you have cats, be aware that many parts of this plant can be extremely toxic to your feline and ingestion can lead to kidney failure.

Livescience.com reports that
"Even eating just a couple of leaves or licking a few pollen grains off their fur can cause cats to suffer acute kidney failure, she said. All parts of these plants, which are members of the Lilium and Hemerocallis genera, are considered poisonous. ... The first symptom of lily toxicity in cats is vomiting... Over the next 12 to 24 hours, the cat may start to urinate frequently, but then urinating might stop altogether, which is a sign of kidney failure. If not brought to a veterinarian, the cat will die within four to seven days. Other signs to watch for include drooling, loss of appetite and decreased activity." ...  Other Easter-time risk for pets include "Easter grass" and chocolate.

From: Susan Feingold

First, a big thank you to everyone who helped us to promote last month’s pet adoption special.  It resulted in the highest number of pet adoptions and lowest euthanasia rate ever recorded at the DeKalb County  shelter!!!   I’d appreciate it if you could help spread the word about our new pet adoption special so we can get more animals saved.  It is called “Shelter Classics” and it is designed to find homes for our long term residents.  Adoption fee is only $20 for animals that have been at the shelter for more than a month and is FREE for pets that have been available for adoption for two months.  (Standard adoption screening still applies.)  What a great deal for a spay/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed and heartworm tested dog, cat, puppy or kitten!

I have attached a press release along with a jpg graphic suitable for posting on Facebook or in emails.  I would really appreciate it if you could send out the adoption promo information in your newsletters, emails and on your Facebook pages and website.

Thank you in advance for caring about the homeless pets in DeKalb County!

Notes from the town hall meeting with DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis [March 13]

The meeting started promptly at 7pm. Mr. Ellis fielded questions from the audience until around 8:40pm, sometimes with added comments from departmental directors. For complaints about County services, the CEO directed a staff member to collect the person's contact information for follow-up.

1) Animal Services Task Force Report

The majority of the questions related to the DeKalb Animal Services Task Force report. Around 20 (?) audience members wore red shirts to show their support for this cause. Mr. Ellis explained the shelter's deteriorated state came to his attention soon after his election, which led to the establishment of the task force; in response to the first question of the evening, he stated that "we have a problem with animal services." He explained that he received the task force report around 2 weeks ago and in the interim, has held several meetings and visited the shelter as well. As a result of these findings and in discussion with the Board of Commissioners (BOC), 10 new positions have been approved. These will be both for individuals to work on the field and at the kennels. These individuals will be cross-trained so that they can be nimble as far as performing multiple tasks (e.g. help with adoptions).
