BEAT THE HEAT AT DEKALB COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES WITH
FREE ADOPTIONS!
Twice as Many Animal Entering the Shelter, Prompt LifeLine Animal Project to Offer Fee-Waived Adoptions throughout June!
ATLANTA, GA -- (June 1, 2015) – Looking for a great way to cool off this summer? LifeLine Animal Project invites you to “Beat the Heat” by coming into DeKalb County Animal Services (DCAS) for a cool adoption special. Throughout June, all dogs and cats six months and over may be adopted for FREE. Dogs must also weigh at least 25 lbs. to qualify. Adopters will receive a dog or cat that has been spayed or neutered, has had all vaccines and is microchipped – a $250 value – for no cost. Adoption counselors will be on hand to ensure the animals are being placed in good homes.
LifeLine’s DCAS Shelter Director Susan Feingold says that offering fee-waived adoptions is a great way to increase adoption rates. “With summer here, twice as many animals are coming into the shelters as usual, and free adoptions tend to create a buzz of excitement and bring more people into shelters,” she says. “According to numerous studies, fee-waived promotions increase adoptions without compromising the quality of care that the animals receive.”
To see pictures of available animals at DCAS, please visit www.dekalbanimalservices.com.

About LifeLine Animal Project
Founded in 2002, LifeLine Animal Project is a nonprofit organization providing lifesaving solutions to end the killing of healthy and treatable animals in county shelters, promote animal welfare and prevent pet overpopulation in metro Atlanta. As the managing organization for DeKalb County Animal Services and Fulton County Animal Services, LifeLine has dramatically increased adoption rates and decreased euthanasia rates by more than half at both shelters. The organization also operates two low-cost spay/neuter clinics, which have performed 80,000 surgeries to date, it’s own no-kill cat shelter and a rehabilitative, no-kill shelter. Other outreach efforts include its Catlanta trap-neuter-return program, the first and largest in metro Atlanta, for stray and feral cats. For more information, please visit www.lifelineanimal.org.

Fuqua Development presented its plans for Phase II of the Decatur Crossings development at the May 26, 2015 Board of Commissioners meeting (meeting notes can be found here). Fuqua had submitted four requests:
1. change the land use designationfrom SUB(Suburban) to TC (Town Center);
2. rezone property from O‐I (Office‐Institutional) and R‐75 (Single‐Family Residential to OCR (Office‐Commercial‐Residential), for a mixed‐use development with 95,000 square feet of retail,restaurant, and office space and 450 multifamily residential units;
3. increase the height of
multifamily residential buildings in a mixed use development from the allowed maximum of two stories
to five stories;to allow two drive‐through lanes for two commercial buildings; and
4. allow a drive‐through
restaurant

The Board of Commissioners deferred the vote until June 23. MANA representatives spoke to support a deferral, as the Cross-Neighborhoods Committee continues to negotiate with Fuqua for improvements to pedestrian safety and access and alternatives that will help modulate cut-through traffic through our neighborhoods.
Fuqua presented its Phase II plans to the community on March 2, 2015. Notes from that meeting as well as previous Fuqua updates are available here.
